The quality of skills in the UK and the calibre of workers available in the labour pool will help the country survive the economic challenges of the coming years.
That is the upbeat message from minister John Denham, the universities and skills secretary, who says that investment in skills is the key to riding out the difficult times ahead in light of the global credit crunch and sliding stock markets.
Claiming that the Labour government had invested wisely in the academic sector and vocational training, he told BBC One's Question Time that the foundations were strong.
"Over ten years we’ve built up our universities," he said.
"We’ve made British science – put it back in the position where it’s second only to the Americans in world influence – we have more people in university, we have more adults with qualifications, fewer adults who can’t read and write, that’s why we’ve got more people in work.
"That is the investment; you see, the only way you prepare for a rainy day is to invest in the talents of the people of the country."
