sick note culture costs £100bn
Tue 18 Mar 2008
Britain's sick-note culture costs the UK economy more than £100 billion each year, a new study is expected to reveal. The research was conducted by Dame Carol Black, national director for health and work. It will recommend the replacement of sick notes with well notes which tell employers what workers are fit enough to do. Dame Black said that large groups of the workforce have 'drifted ' onto benefits culture with illnesses, which were "often treatable and preventable if we could get in there early". "Often these conditions are mild, such as mild mental health and musculo-skeletal problems, such as a bad back," she said. "But we have nothing in place at the moment that gives us early intervention and prevention." She went on to recommend that GPs have improved access to physiotherapy and mental health counseling services in order to get people back to work sooner.
