ONS: More jobs and more workers
19/03/2008

The government's labour market statistics have revealed more people are available to work and there are more jobs on offer. According to the Office of National Statistics (ONS) the number of unemployed people, the unemployment rate and the claimant count have all fallen. The employment rate is up by 0.3 per cent on the last quarter and the number of people in work has reached an all-time high of 29.46 million. However, it revealed that average earnings including bonuses have fallen. This fails to help workers pay for daily goods and offset the effect of inflation on day-to-day prices. The British Retail Consortium has rejected claims that rising food prices are to blame. "The latest official data knocks on the head scare stories that rocketing food prices are driving up inflation," said director general Stephen Robertson.
