Employers have been told to not favour older workers at the expense of younger members of the workforce. The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) has advised business to take a balanced approach to employees regardless of their age. Diversity officer, Freda Line said: "It's important to remember that because we now have far more positive attitudes in this country towards older workers, we shouldn't let that mean that we start having negative attitudes about younger workers." Many people prefer to return to work after they receive their state pension. According to data from the Office for National Statistics, the number of older people in employment is rising. "Age discrimination is something that happens to people at all ages, but younger workers face discrimination too," warned Ms Line. The CIPD has evidence that discrimination starts impacting at about age 35 and over for women, and at about 45 and over for men.
