Small and medium sized businesses offer graduates chances not found in larger 'blue chip' firms, a chief executive has claimed. Mike Hill from Graduate Prospects said graduate training schemes were not the only route to success and university leavers could find similar challenges with smaller employers. Graduate schemes attract around 15 per cent of university leavers. "The great majority of graduates are never going to get on them and do not want to get on them," he said. Mr Hill explained that working for an SME can be more beneficial because "you can have a better work-life balance, the opportunities to promotion are much quicker, and depending on the size of the organisation, it is likely that you can very rapidly turn your hand to all sorts of things". The Association of Graduate Recruiters (AGR) expects graduate salaries to increase, at a median level of 2.1 per cent in 2008.
