26/03/2008The government has announced that 3.3 million people are now signed up to its skills pledge, Personnel Today has reported. The initiative encourages organisations to support their employees as they train for nationally recognised qualifications. "Every employee has the potential to contribute to the long-term performance of organisations," said John Denham, secretary for state for innovation, universities and skills. "But this potential can only be unlocked if every employee can access high-quality training." The Learning and Skills Council (LSC) launched a five-year plan to change how people think about learning add skills in July 2007. "The Skills Campaign is one of the most significant attempts by government to improve the attitudes and aspirations of employers and individuals to learning and training, at all levels," it claimed. The latest employer to sign up to the skills pledge is NHS South West. It joined Shell, BP, Scottish and Southern Energy and disability employer Remploy who signed up recently.
