'Work from home day' announced

Thu 1 May 2008

01/05/2008

The National Work from Home Day will be May 15th and launch Work Wise Week 2008. The initiative is to highlight a series of smart working practices and will conclude with a summit on May 21st in London. A recent study found smarter working can reduce wasted effort and travel, "by the introduction of new working methods and routines, and helping improve the skills gap by reengaging excluded groups". It was conducted by the South East of England Regional Development Agency, the South East England Regional Assembly, the National Health Service, BT and Work Wise UK. It emphasised the need for smarter working, and recognised wide-ranging benefits to both employers and employees. The week identifies environmental, social and transport benefits and dedicates one day to each. Nick Dines, head of communication at the British Chambers of Commerce, said: "With advances in technology homeworking is now a realistic option for many people."
