The British Retail Consortium (BRC) has announced more retailers have taken its eco-pledge, which proved profit and protection can go hand-in-hand. Its initiative requires companies to agree on a series of green measures to reduce waste and emissions. Stephen Robertson, director general, said: "We recognise we can make a real difference through our own operations and by supporting customers and staff in ways that suit their budgets and lifestyles." He announced that Argos, Marks & Spencer and Sainsbury's had joined other big name firms such as Next, Asda, Homebase, John Lewis, Waitrose and Tesco. Each of them are now committed to cutting water use, offering energy efficient products, reducing packaging and developing carbon foot printing of products. Several retailers have adopted new policies on their use of plastic shopping bags –some now charge shoppers, while others have banned them outright.
