CIPD: Brown should be bolder

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) has called on the government to be bolder and grant the right to request flexible working. "We wholly support moves to extend the 'right to request' to more parents," said Mike Emmott, employee relations advisers. This would prevent division within the workplace, which he said is possible under current plans. "An extension of the right to request to all workers would level the playing field, without compelling employers to offer flexible working where this is incompatible with business needs," he commented. The government is currently awaiting the review by Imelda Walsh into flexible working practices. The CIPD's research predicted new flexible working practices could bring "improved employee engagement" and boost productivity. Most employers support flexible working, although employees wishing to apply should first complete 26 weeks in their new post.
