The government has launched a £200 million training initiative to remedy skills shortages in the UK, it has been reported.
Funding for the scheme was announced by secretary of state for innovation, universities and skills, John Denham, who said it will reduce the country's reliance on foreign workers.
"Eastern European migrants have filled shortages but, in the longer term, this is not something we want to rely on," he commented. "People can go as quickly as they come."
The investment will be used for specialist training colleges, which focus on construction, IT, finance, science and engineering skills.
Mr Denham expressed his concern that too much of current skills training is reliant on the hope employers will train workers.
He said: "If we are to be certain our economy is equipped to face future challenges, we will need in the future to do more than to continue to rely on hope."
