Adults in modern society have more jobs to choose from than they did when they left school, the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) has claimed.
Its director of adult-learner support said there are more opportunities in several new areas.
Claire Mycock said people can move into "many different types of careers…or lots of different vocational areas that people wouldn't have necessarily been aware of before".
Research by the LSC on adult learning found 67 per cent of those surveyed think it would be worthwhile, in the long run, to get another qualification.
However, as part of the same study, a quarter of respondents said they were held back by a lack of confidence.
Ms Mycock said there are lots of opportunities for people if they wanted to go back into education.
"If they've left school and they haven’t come away with the qualifications they need or want to have, they can access courses where the tuition is invariably free."
Both the number of people in employment and the employment rate increased in March, according to the Office for National Statistics.
