Temporary agency workers will now receive equal treatment after 12 weeks in employment. The deal announced today by the Trades Union Congress (TUC), government and the Confederation of British Industry will entitle them to "at least the basic working and employment conditions" of similarly recruited workers. "This is a great step forward to protect the majority of vulnerable agency workers," said Unison general secretary, Dave Prentis, who led negotiations for the TUC. "Agency workers are becoming an increasing feature of the public sector and we want to make sure that they are treated fairly." Many employers preferred for these rights to only be conferred to temporary workers after 12 months in employment. John Hutton, business secretary, said the deal satisfied the government's aims of providing "flexibility for British employers and fairness for workers". Mr Prentis noted that there were still workers not covered by the agreement and vouched to protect those "who may still be exploited and abused by bad bosses".
