The Law Society is set to release a study which shows a huge pay gap between male and female lawyers and those of different races, the Times has learnt. The society's research will confirm men earn on average £19,000 more than women and white workers are paid £10,000 more than black or ethnic minority professionals. "The pay gap demonstrates not only that many women are not equally rewarded for equal work, but, most significantly, they are not making the progress through the profession that they should," said chairwoman of the Association of Women Solicitors, Fiona Fitzgerald. Despite this inequality she noted an increase in female solicitors, 60 per cent of last year's intake were women, she said. Ms Fitzgerald explained that in many businesses there is a "secretive culture" and women often felt less likely to push for improved salaries. "This is slowly changing and women entering the profession are demanding change," she added. Separate research by the British Computer Society revealed women only make up 14 per cent of employees in the IT sector.
