Skills minister, David Lammy, announced he has made the provision of leadership and management training "a priority". His remarks coincide with the Learning and Skills Council's National Learning at Work Day, during which managers are urged to take control of their business through the government's Train to Gain initiative. Of the 163,000 managers in England, almost three-quarters lack management skills, according to the National Employer Skills Survey 2007, something the government is keen to rectify. "I hope that employers will respond by making full use of the opportunity to improve their staff leadership credentials, and to get their staff trained up to deliver real growth in 2008," Mr Lammy said. The LSC has said the Train to Gain budget has recently doubled to more than £1 billion and will offer grants of £1,000 to SME owners who wish to learn to improve their management and leadership skills. According to recent national statistics, there were 678,500 job vacancies in the three months to February 2008, up 1,600 from the previous three months.
