The modern workforce needs to handle more information than ever before, BT's director of employment policy has said. Caroline Waters told the Work Wise UK summit last week broadband and Web 2.0 have transformed the working environment. She explained Web 1.0 was about pushing information out and workers now exist in a 2.0 world where they are "using it as a social tool to engage people". "We can now take work to anywhere in the world where there is a workforce who can engage with us," she observed. "If you took the whole US job market to China, China would still have the labour surplus." Ms Waters told delegates these changes have affected our working methods because we "have to understand how to assimilate stuff at an incredible rate", she said, because "it is coming at us faster and faster". Analyst firm IDC has said the current wave of innovations, such as Web 2.0 applications and open development communities, have set the stage for what it called a 'post-disruption marketplace' where these applications shape business.
