Short 'e-breaks' at work can boost productivity, new research has claimed. Studies by computer games firm, PopCap Games, assisted by London Goldsmiths University, found workers felt refreshed from a short period surfing the web. Electronic breaks are replacing fag breaks and tea breaks for UK workers, claimed Dr Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic, an academic who helped with the study. "By factoring in a dedicated slot for an e-break bosses are fostering a more trusting working environment, boosting productivity and ultimately increasing their profit which surely makes good business sense," he commented. Most employers frown upon the use of work time to conduct personal web searches and email friends - according to information security consultants, Global Secure Systems, social networking at work is costing UK business £6.5 billion annually. The study found a ten-minute e-break can have significant benefits, although employers are concerned they will distract staff.
