The creation of a national information register could lose the UK jobs, the Foundation for Information Policy Research (FIPR) has said. Its introduction would create a "huge public fight" between the government and internet service providers, phone companies, web service companies, NGOs and many others, chair of the foundation, Ross Anderson has predicted. "If they won, it would impose huge costs on the online industry and make Britain an unattractive place to run any kind of communications service firm," he said. The new database would retain electronic information such as emails as well as details of telephone conversations. Mr Anderson said the FIPR is not aware of any other EU country with such powers and concluded "the effect of the proposed law would be to get firms to move their operations from the UK to other EU countries". A British national emigrates every three minutes, the Daily Mail has reported a survey claimed.
