Millions of pounds are wasted on inefficient use of government office space. A report by the committee of public accounts estimated up to £326 million was squandered every year. "Departments need to improve the quality of their management information to understand how their buildings are performing and implement action to improve efficiency," MPs heard. The Treasury was found to be the most wasteful department, it allocated 232 sq ft per person when regular standards are below 120 sq ft. The committee revealed most departments know "very little about the environmental performance of individual buildings such as whether buildings have recycling schemes and the amount of energy each building consumes". As part of a governmental efficiency initiative, the Office of Government Commerce is reviewing the entire government civil property estate by 2013, with the aim of saving £1.5 billion annually.
