Millions of mums are now back in work to help their families face the increasing cost of living.

Research by Scottish Widows has revealed of the 7.1 million households with children, 4.4 million now need two salaries to get by.

Protection market director, Richard Jones says: "The reliance on two incomes is the only way to maintain a decent standard of living for many families and with the rising cost of living this isn't likely to ease off any time soon."

The study also revealed families with dependant children have higher mortgages and more debt.

"While the country was enjoying economic boom this was sustainable but now everyone has to tighten their belts more than ever," Mr Jones said.

To maintain a comfortable standard of living almost half (47 per cent) of couples rely on two salaries, while 61 per cent of families with kids need a second breadwinner.

Government statistics show weekly full-time pay has increased by 4.6 per cent in the year to April 2008.
