Potential applicants have been put off banking jobs because of the recent economic downturn, a leading bank's HR chief has said.

Global head of HR for investment bank UBS told Personnel Today its role in financial markets would slow applications.

"It's true our sector is not very popular right now, and that may continue for several years," said Maria Bentley.

She suggested some banks might reduce their recruitment efforts and limit programmes devised to attract fresh talent.

In future it was important banks "handle ourselves well and ensure we are part of the solution in order to repair our industry," she noted.

According to graduate careers site Prospects, 61.1 per cent of students who graduated in 2006 secured employment in the UK - of this 8.1 per cent went into business and financial professions.

A further nine per cent had begun working and studying, and only six per cent were thought to be unemployed.
