Application for graduate jobs up 100%
Tue 14 Oct 2008

Applications for graduate jobs have increased by 100 per cent, [add comma] according to candidate application statistics, Onrec has reported.
Broadbean Technology has revealed applicants now face stiffer competition because firms are offering less internships and graduate programmes.
"Almost every sector is seeing a higher level of applications than in the same period last year," said managing director Dan McGuire.
He noted that applications had double since 2007, despite an economic slowdown.
"This implies that the class of 2008 are finding it particularly difficult to obtain the type of role that they went to university to get."
Chairman of a consultancy that finds jobs for graduates, Paul Farrer, said degree students often have misconceptions about the jobs market.
"Relatively few seem to study a degree with a view to landing a degree-related job," he told Onrec.com
University students are increasingly aware of what is happening in the economy and are getting "less picky about the roles that they take".
Many graduates move into call centre jobs in Liverpool, Birmingham and Cardiff once they graduate.
