British Gas has said it will treble the number of engineering apprentices it takes on, to 1,000.
It revealed an additional £40 million will be invested in training centres to help educate a new generation of domestic gas engineers.
"Our apprenticeship scheme is helping to drive the business forward," said managing director of services, Chris Weston.
"It's an important route to attracting motivated and enthusiastic recruits and providing an enviably high standard of quality training."
The company currently attracts 50 applicants for each training post and will use the investment to extend its current training period, from 12 to 18 months.
In an industrial job more associated with men than women, the company has also trebled the number of female recruits, from four per cent to 13 per cent.
The Institute of the Motor Industry has recently pledged to double the number of apprentices joining its scheme.
