Are you a registered Mental Health Nurse who is interested in working in Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) environment? Do you enjoy nursing patients who are in the most acute phase of their illness, and helping them improve their condition? If so, this sounds like a role for you!

A psychiatric intensive care ward in Carlisle, Cumbria, needs a Mental Health Nurse to join the busy but welcoming team, to work 3-4 long shifts per week (days). The individual should have great communication skills, the ability to manage risk and make clinical decisions quickly to prevent situations from escalating.

This Mental Health Nurse role entails working on a 10-bed mixed sex ward, which is always at full capacity. All patients on the ward are extremely poorly, and as such require high levels of care from the MDT around them. It would be a benefit for the Mental Health Nurse to have worked in PICU or in an acute environment previously, however this is not essential as long as individuals have the willingness to learn.

The successful individual will be joining a very supportive team, and working with a highly regarded ward manager who puts patient care at the heart of everything she does.

Due to the nature of the environment they will be working in, the Mental Health Nurse must have PMVA training - Randstad are able to provide this if needed.

This role is primarily for day shifts, however the ward manager will try and be flexible depending on the Mental Health Nurse's preferences. Day shifts run between 07:30-20:00 and night shifts are between 19:30-08:00.

A standard day shift for the Mental Health Nurse could involve:
- Completing morning or bed time medication rounds, as well as offering patients 'as and when' medication if they become distressed or agitated
- Ensuring that prescribed and controlled medications are stored correctly, i.e. each patient has an individual drawer on the medication trolley.
- Managing any admissions that come in during their shift
- Updating care plans and completing incident forms if they are required, completing tribunal reports and doing shift allocations for the night shift or for the next day
- Mentoring and demonstrating good standards of care to Band 2/3 health care assistants. Monitoring their practice to ensure it is up to standard.
- Being the 'shift lead' when required, and allocating which staff member is doing observations with which patient at what time
- Participating in MDT meetings and handovers. Writing handovers for the next shift's staff to pick up

Benefits to the Mental Health Nurse include:
- Ultra-competitive pay rates of £25-£40 per hour, depending on the shift
- Working for a committed, supportive and experienced Ward Manager who wants agency workers to feel as valued as permanent staff members
- Attractive referral scheme - giving you £300 of vouchers when you Refer a Friend to Randstad
- Support with your NMC revalidation and free, accredited training and certificates (practical and online)

The ideal Mental Health Nurse will have the following to be considered:
- Have a valid NMC PIN (Mental Health)
- Excellent written and verbal communication
