Autism support worker

Randstad Student Support are now recruiting for Support Workers to work with students with a wide range of needs, including academic, social, emotional and physical. Starting as soon as possible.

We are looking for Support Workers with Autism qualifications and/or previous experience working with autistic pupils. You will be supporting young people with ASD (Autistic Spectrum Disorder) and SEN and will be required to support individuals on a 1:1 and small group basis, assisting with classwork, behaviour management and helping pupils with their daily routine.

Personal Attributes/Experience

* Experience of children/adults with ASD/Asperger Syndrome
* Understanding of Autism Spectrum Conditions and the impact this can have on their learning and understanding/interpretation of the world
* Caring, understanding with a real desire to support students with additional support needs
* Understanding of what a 'person centred approach' means
* Good written and verbal communication skills
* Be able to work under own initiative
* A proactive and "common sense approach"
* Ability to work as part of a team
* Ability to understand the concept of "support" in education being different to "care".
* Ability to manage stressful situations
* Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, parents, carers and students
* Successful applicants must be suitable to work with children and vulnerable adults- A DBS check (Disclosure and Barring Service) will be carried out


* To work under the direction of the teacher during sessions
* To deliver a high standard of support for learners with ALS needs on a 1:1 or small group basis
* Maintain an "Autism Friendly" learning environment
* To develop learners' independence
* To develop learners' English and Maths skills
* Keep students on task and engaged
* Ensure the personal safety and well being of students and self at all times
* Support students who may experience challenging behaviour and/or emotional difficulties
* Provide support to students during breaks and lunch time
* Escort students to and from taxis and during activities in the community
* Monitor students' progress and set new targets


* Experience of SLDD settings
* Experience in personal care
* An understanding of alternative methods of communication that could be used with non-verbal students - PECS and Makaton/BSL
