Communications Officer

Purpose of the job

The Communications Officer will work at the heart of the Programme Team, supporting the Programme Manager and wider Programme Team and partners through the dynamic and inspiring promotion. Programme to stakeholders, the media and the local community with the intent of delivering a step change in the communities awareness of, and engagement in the unique built, natural and cultural heritage.

Key work areas

1) To take the central role in promoting programmes, with particular emphasis on increasing awareness and the opportunities for people to get involved.

2) To review the communication plan for the second year, to focus on telling the story, by drawing the output from the 38 projects together into a coherent story.
* To lead group discussions with project leaders and stakeholders to create the core messages and content to be used to tell the story, possibly using a timeline approach.
* To determine the range of media/events/activities to be used to ensure that these messages reach all residents and visitors to the area (tailoring these to specific sub-groups of interest)
* To plan the timetable with which these messages will be developed and then communicated
* To develop a process to ensure that the Telling the Story content continues to expand as the programme moves through years 3, 4 and 5.

3) To review the results of the residents & visitors survey (CCRI report) as part of the monitoring and evaluation process, setting the baseline for the delivery stage, contributing to communication objectives for the programme.

4) To update and implement the Communications activity tracker, to promote projects' activities and events, in liaison with project leaders, stakeholders and the programme team
* To assist project leaders in the promotion of their projects (e.g. explaining the press release template, providing training on the use of social media)
* To facilitate the development of links across projects, to show how the natural, built and cultural heritage is inter-dependent.

5) Take the lead role in driving the use of, and content of the website and social media feeds, ensuring that information is accurate, inspiring and easily accessible - with a view to sustainable archiving at the end of the programme as well as the immediate programme needs.
* The essential elements of the website already exist so what is needed now is more content from the projects to put more 'flesh on the bones', providing news stories/reasons for people to visit the website to learn more.

6) To liaise with Communications team and other staff in the engagement process, helping to run events and use the information created to contribute to telling the story

7) To review the Interpretation Strategy created in the development stage, to produce recommendations for the use of various interpretive elements (with costs) to facilitate Telling the Story

8) To provide cover in the absence of the District Communications Officer to support wider district communications


The successful candidate will have a proven track record in implementing communication strategies, and to have included working with social media as well as with print, radio and film/ television media.

The successful candidate will have strong written skills and the capability to take complex information and distil into coherent and engaging copy.

The successful candidate will have a proven track record in working with a diverse network of partners, stakeholders or direct with members of the public, preferably in an environmental or public sector arena.

The successful candidate will have experience in digital media for the maintenance of our website and social media feeds.

The successful candidate will be comfortable with, and experienced in the use of computers for word processing, and maintaining spread sheets.

A knowledge of, or passion for natural and cultural heritage would be desirable, but is not essential
