Cosma Casting UK is an operating unit of Magna International, one of the world's premier global automotive suppliers. Magna's pioneering technology and creativity allows our customers to ask for solutions that lie beyond what they previously thought was possible.

Cosma Casting UK are a new manufacturing facility in Telford in the UK. We are looking for Laboratory Technician. Cosma Casting UK specialises in high pressure die-casting and builds medium to large aluminium die-cast automotive components.


Position Summary:


The Laboratory Technician is an integral "Cross Functional Team member" in the Plant Quality team. This team is responsible for all activities from quoting new business to successfully sustained full volume production.

The position holder is responsible for the Quality Metallurgical Laboratory elements detailed in this Job Description and using the QMS processes & site test equipment to make data based Product Quality decisions.


Role Responsibilities:




* Work collaboratively to support the customer and team through innovation, lessons learned and best practices
* Responsible for coordinating all defined product testing activities throughout the launch process and into production
* Interpret the customers systems and specifications and ensure they are met
* Support process improvement and problem solving meetings as and where required
* Support to ensure the phased/gated deliverables in the APQP process (and customer websites) are met on time
* Spectrometer analysis - Use Spectrometer to test and give feedback to Melt process
* Tensile machine - Carry out tensile preparation and testing of Dog Bones from Die Casting
* Complete microstructure analysis of parts. Undertake preparation, testing, and examination of metallurgical specimens
* Analyse results, produce reports, and make appropriate recommendations in order to ensure metals and associated processes are fit for purpose.
* Raise submissions to out-source testing house(s) for mechanical properties and other testing not undertaken at company site where required.
* Operate blister oven to carry out porosity checks where required.
* Carry out Hardness checks using hardness tester.
* To be computer literate and able to use MS Office package (MiniTab would be an asset).
* Flexibility to carry out other duties as and when required.
* Maintain calibrations and records for Lab equipment and production equipment as required by the necessary schedule.
* Report any failure of calibrations, advise on any actions required, and undertake re-calibration following rectification.
* Ensure that testing processes and procedures and robust, fit for purpose and all equipment and tools in use are well maintained and correctly calibrated.
* Regularly assess Laboratory functions for technical adequacy, report and make recommendations for improvements.
* CNC Programming experience for preparation of tensile dogbones
* Represent the Quality Metallurgical Department at the morning meetings in order to report out testing results
* Where product fails test follow appropriate corrective action procedures as per CCUK Business Management System dictates
* Report into Research & Development team (Promatek) for any issues that require further in-depth resolution.

* 2 to 5 years' experience in an automotive / high volume manufacturing environment
* Analytical skills
* Understanding of Manufacturing Engineering
* Strong understanding of core quality tools
* Casting experience
* Experience in tensile and hardness testing
* Experience using spectrometer and microscope
* Experience using hand held measuring equipment
* Metallurgy background
* Quality / Engineering BTEC or equivalent
