Learning Support Assistant

You could be supporting students with Special Educational Needs including Autism, Asperger's and moderate and severe learning difficulties by helping them achieve their potential by providing learning support both in and out of class.

* work under the direction of the teacher during sessions
* develop learners' independence
* students require a lot of social/emotional/pastoral support particularly within their friendship groups
* to deliver a high standard of support for learners with additional learning support needs on a 1:1 or small group basis
* develop learners' English and Maths skills
* ability to keep students on task and engaged
* ensuring the personal safety and well being of students and self at all times
* provide support to students during breaks and lunch time
* escorting students to and from taxis and during activities in the community
* adhere to and implement student behaviour plans/ behaviour strategies
* ability to monitor students' progress and set new targets
* adhere to and implement student behaviour plans/ behaviour strategies
* ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, parents, carers and students

Requirements for this role

* caring, understanding with a real desire to support students with additional support needs
* understanding of what a 'person centred approach' means
* good written and verbal communication skills
* be able to work under own initiative
* a proactive and "common sense approach"
* ability to work as part of a team
* ability to understand the concept of "support" in education being different to "care"
* ability to manage stressful situations
* be able to support students who may experience challenging behaviour and / or emotional difficulties
* ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, parents, carer's and students
* successful applicants must be suitable to work with children and vulnerable adults
* a DBS check (Disclosure and Barring Service) will be carried out

Desirable for this role

* Experience of children/adults with ASD/Asperger Syndrome
* Experience of SLDD settings
* Experience in personal care
* An understanding of alternative methods of communication that could be used with non-verbal students - PECS and Makaton/BSL
