We require a Materials Science Engineer to join the Materials Engineering function which is part of the Technology department. You will be part of the Tribology & Advanced Processing project team

Job Description

This Materials Science Engineer role utilises knowledge of materials, specifically tribology, corrosion and oxidation, in order to identify, analyse and recommend suitable materials science and engineering solutions for a high profile and innovative valve technology under development.The role works cross-functionally across the Technology and Advanced Engineering departments to provide expert opinion with regards to test planning, analysis of test samples and data and providing recommendations to the business in terms of product quality and manufacturing.

Aims of the Position

* Determine the most suitable Materials Science and Engineering solution(s) for the valve shaft to bush interface which will experience temperatures up to 760 °C in a dry lubricated environment.
* Provide Materials Science and Engineering support for other Advanced Engineering projects on an ad-hoc basis.

Main Duties of the Employee

* Create effective technical documentation which states the overall Materials Science and Engineering performance of all shaft and bush materials evaluated for the valve technology. Provide an evidence-based recommendation for using a given shaft and bush material pair in the valve technology, considering engineering, quality and supply chain requirements.
* Accountable for analysing complex test data from a wide range of testing platforms in order to determine trends.
* Responsible for developing, planning and organising appropriate tests to evaluate the corrosion and oxidation performance of a wide range of shaft and bush materials, when considering application conditions and duty cycle. Characterise test samples and provide detailed justification for the observed corrosion and oxidation performance.
* Provide recommendations in terms of appropriate tests which can be used to evaluate shaft and bush tribological performance. Responsible for analysing and subsequently providing detailed justification for the friction and wear performance experienced on test samples, identifying key trends, similarities and differences across testing platforms.
* Create a model which correlates friction, wear, oxidation and corrosion performance of shaft and bush materials across all test platforms. The model must afford a concise review of the similarities and differences between test types, providing detailed summaries of correlation performance.
* Responsible for developing detailed, robust Materials Engineering specifications for relevant shaft and bush materials using a template.
* Provide a detailed summary of competitor shaft and bush benchmarking activities performed on relevant products. Recommend future benchmarking activities, providing appropriate justification.
* Provide ad-hoc Materials Science and Engineering support to other Advanced Engineering projects as requested by your line manager.

Equipment or Software Knowledge Required

* Knowledge and experience of using materials characterisation equipment, such as metallographic preparation, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy is required.
* Knowledge and experience of using tribological test and analysis equipment, such as a tribometer and an interferometer, is required.
* Knowledge of and experience of using Microsoft Office tools is required.

Employee Competencies

* Material characterisation - Interprets mechanical, chemical, microstructural and physical properties using laboratory equipment to confirm compliance to print, and correlates these properties with field or component test results to determine robustness; defines appropriate material characterisation schedule using correct laboratory equipment to ensure requirements are met.
* Component failure analysis - Analyses specimen physical and chemical properties using applicable laboratory equipment to identify failure mode and mechanism; evaluates design intent, manufacturing, processing in accordance with established processes and operational history, print requirements, part function and failure mode to determine root cause(s); recommends corrective actions considering material limitations and manufacturing constraints to protect the customer and prevent reoccurrence.

Qualifications Required

Batchelors, Masters or PhD in Materials Science / Engineering or a relevant discipline is required.

Level of Experience Required:

* Equivalent work experience in Materials Science and Engineering or a relevant discipline area is required with a demonstrated track record of technical problem solving and quality decision making.
* Significant technical and practical experience of tribology, preferably with knowledge and experience of high temperature applications is required.
* Knowledge of materials used in high temperature, dry lubricated tribological environments is preferred.
* Experience of the automotive industry would be beneficial.
