MECHANICAL ENGINEER NEEDED ASAP FOR SITE IN SHEFFIELD CITY CENTRE

£16.00 PER HOUR

8am - 5pm Monday - Friday

We are looking for a Mechanical Engineer to provide a responsive service to resolve mechanical maintenance issues across the site.

As part of a team of Maintenance Technicians, use mechanical maintenance skills to ensure effective delivery of the site's maintenance function. Carry out the day to day planned and reactive maintenance of mechanical elements, across the whole site. At all times work in compliance with the company policies, current technical legislation and health and safety standards.

Main Duties and Responsibilities



* Carry out planned and reactive mechanical maintenance across the whole site through testing, fault finding and repair on a range of services, installations, associated plant, appliances and systems. Complete jobs safely, ensuring procedures are followed correctly, and that own work is completed on time and at all times work in compliance with the company policies, current technical legislation and health and safety standards.
* As directed by the Supervisor, prioritise jobs in order of urgency. This involves drawing upon depth of knowledge, skills, experience and expertise to deal with the job in hand. Make decisions on the methods to be used and the sequence of actions.
* Undertake mechanical maintenance of services using a range of tools and techniques: this includes central heating systems, mains cold water, gas services, domestic hot water, low pressure cold water, steam, compressed air etc. The work is split between planned and reactive maintenance.
* As directed by the Supervisor, liaise with contractors who are working on premises to ensure they are carrying out work in accordance with required timescales and health and safety standards. Provide advice about how to tackle technical tasks, using in-depth knowledge of the company and its infrastructure.
* Liaise with and maintain good relationships with key contacts in University departments to let them know about work being undertaken and keep them up to date with progress.
* Responsible for reporting stock levels of consumables to enable planned and reactive maintenance to be achieved
* Maintain personal tools, equipment and vehicles, taking responsibility for the safe keeping of these. Complete regular checks on vehicle/s to ensure it is in good condition.
* Provide a mechanical maintenance service to all staff working in buildings.
* Take responsibility for carrying out regular maintenance checks of vehicle.
* Responsible for test meters, tools and stock items etc.
* Complete all necessary details on job sheets using the Planon database.
* Work is received from the Mechanical Supervisor or from the Planon database. Jobs arrive with a response time indicated, according to pre-set Service Level Agreements (SLA's), and the job holder is responsible for completing an initial investigate, if not eh whole job itself, within the required timescale.
* As directed by the Supervisor, prioritise a number of jobs according to importance, taking into account the indicated SLA.
* Assist Supervisors in planning for future work e.g. by reporting maintenance work that needs to be done.
* Decide how to tackle maintenance faults, taking into account SLA's. The jobholder decides the best way of solving the fault: with particular consideration of health and safety, time to complete and costs.
* Decide what materials to order to meet the needs of the jobs as they arise.
* Liaise directly with the Mechanical Supervisor daily to provide information about the progress of jobs and about maintenance issues which the job holder has identified, and which the Mechanical Supervisor is not able to rectify personally.
* Liaise with colleagues in the maintenance team: liaise to discuss jobs currently being undertaken, sharing technical knowledge and experience to assist colleagues in completing jobs.
* Interact with staff, students and other customers across the whole campus daily as required to carry out work. Advise them of the work to be carried out and keep them updates with progress and completion times as necessary.
* As directed by the Supervisor, liaise with contractors carrying out maintenance work, as required providing information and advice.
* Liaise with suppliers as required.
* Respond to requests for assistance at the site outside normal working hours in accordance with the departments' call-out procedures. The post may be required to participate in a formal on-call rota to provide emergency responses across the estate. Participation in this rota will be determined by the company in accordance with the on-call provisions.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA

Qualifications and experience



* An apprenticeship in mechanical engineering or an equivalent qualification is essential to carry out the job requirements.
* Have an industry recognised qualification, City & Guilds level 3 or equivalent.
* comprehensive working knowledge of current, relevant health & safety legislation is essential to meet the job requirements.
* Knowledge of heating, ventilation, gas, hot and cold water installations as well as of the products and services available for maintaining these.
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to communicate effectively with customers, contractors and suppliers.
* A willingness to work out of hours and participate in the On Call rota
* Ability to work as part of a team and on own initiative.
* A flexible and positive approach to work.
* Full current driving license.
