Start Date: August 2019

Salary: From 22,000RMB - 26,000RMB per month net

School Overview: This school was founded in 1996 and has grown from a small primary school into a full Pre-Nursery to Grade 12 programme with 1100 students of over 45 different nationalities. It is an English language day school offering the IB curriculum at all levels. The school employs approximately 145 expatriate staff representing over 20 different countries and 35 Chinese national teachers. The staff, students, and parents of SSIS work in partnership to create a learning environment that encourages and enables students to be self-motivated, lifelong learners, who value other cultures and are responsible, meaningful participants in the international community. The school is located on a 10 hectare site and the state-of-the-art campus includes facilities such as a 25 metre heated swimming pool, two FIFA certified artificial turf soccer fields, tennis courts, running track, two libraries and two double gymnasiums. It has up to date technology and computer facilities, including wireless internet throughout the school and a media centre. There are numerous speciality rooms including eight science labs, six art rooms, five music rooms, ten music practice rooms, a 650 seat performing arts centre, and a black box theatre.

Location Overview: Suzhou is a charming city that is situated 80 KM west of Shanghai (22 minutes by fast train). It was recently voted as the second most "liveable" city in China for expatriates. Known as the "Venice of the Orient" it is an ancient city that is steeped in History and culture. However, it has also embraced the spirit of the new China and enjoys all the infrastructure and amenities that are required to make life in the 21st Century very pleasant indeed.

Role Overview:

To ensure that the library, is an effective reading, inquiry and research centre of the school's educational programme; ensuring that all students develop the inquiry skills to become independent, lifelong learners and readers.

Responsibilities will include;

* Collaborating with Elementary teachers to ensure written and taught curricula develop inquiry skills.
* Ensuring that students have access to quality resources to support the curriculum, research, and pleasure reading across a range of reading levels, and the knowledge of ow to access these resources.
* Ensuring that the library is an effective reading, inquiry, research and resource centre
* Ensuring that students develop inquiry and literacy skills
* Ensure a vertical articulation of inquiry skills from Nursery to Grade 5 and that these align with the articulation of inquiry skills developed by the Elementary librarian
* Collaborate with Grade Level Teachers and PYP Coordinators to ensure that objectives within the vertical articulation document are embedded and taught across the Elementary curriculum.
* Develop, maintain and implement the ICT Scope and Sequence.
* Provide teachers support for the planning and teaching of the skills outlined in the ICT Scope and Sequence.
* Instruct students in understanding and developing skills in Information Literacy
* Develop an understanding of academic honesty.
* Help students learn how to correctly cite the information that they find.
* Develop the skills and practices that reflect academic honesty.
* Updating and expanding the current library collections of print and non-print materials in accordance with curriculum, programme and staff development needs, and with the reading interests of students and the wider SSIS community, in consultation with all relevant members of staff.
* Ensuring that received materials are catalogued and placed correctly on shelves for borrowing.
* Monitoring the collection, that resources are accounted for and lost and damaged items are paid for and replaced.
* Communicate to the school community the arrival of new materials, and respond to enquiries about access to current resources.
* Promote the library as central resource for learning in the school and to encourage students to use it frequently during classes as well as breaks.
* Promote the library, inquiry and literacy through events such as Book Week, visiting authors and storytellers and parent information meetings.


* At least 2 years of post-qualification experience.
* IB experience is preferred but not essential.
