Do you believe that understanding a student's trauma history is the key to unlocking their learning potential?
Are you skilled at supporting pupils with complex learning and social needs in a compassionate, consistent manner?
Could your specialist knowledge in trauma-informed practice make you an indispensable resource in a North Cumbrian school setting?
If you answered YES to these questions, then Randstad Education is seeking a highly skilled and empathetic Special Educational Needs (SEN) Teaching Assistant with expertise in Trauma-Informed Practice to join our partner schools across North Cumbria!
This is a profoundly rewarding role focused on supporting pupils, often on a 1:1 or small group basis, who present with complex learning difficulties, significant social and emotional needs (SEMH), and who may have experienced Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). Your expertise will be vital in creating a supportive, predictable, and regulated environment that allows these children to access the curriculum and thrive.
Key Responsibilities
Implement Trauma-Informed Strategies: Apply principles of safety, trust, consistency, and choice to de-escalate crisis situations and promote emotional regulation.
Complex Needs Support: Provide dedicated support to pupils with a range of needs, including ASD, ADHD, attachment disorders, and moderate to severe learning difficulties.
Intervention Delivery: Deliver tailored educational and therapeutic interventions (as directed by the SENCO/Teacher) focused on improving literacy, numeracy, and communication skills.
Behaviour Management: Utilise calm, proactive, and restorative behaviour management techniques, focusing on the underlying need rather than just the behaviour.
Liaison and Reporting: Maintain detailed records, contribute to pupil reviews (e.g., EHCP meetings), and liaise effectively with the class teacher, SENCO, and external agencies.
Personal Care: Provide support with personal care as required, maintaining dignity and respect for the pupil at all times.
What We Look for in You
Essential Experience: Proven, recent experience supporting children with complex learning and social needs in an educational setting.
Specialist Knowledge: Demonstrated understanding or qualification in Trauma-Informed Practice, Restorative Approaches, or similar de-escalation/regulation techniques.
Personal Attributes: Exceptional levels of patience, consistency, resilience, and empathy.
Qualifications: Relevant NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in Supporting Teaching and Learning is highly desirable.
Commitment to Safeguarding: A fully enhanced DBS check (or willingness to apply for one) registered on the Update Service.
