A SEN school in North Leeds is looking for a teaching assistant to support a student with hearing impairment. The successful applicant will hold a BSL certification, ideally level 2 or above, although candidates with proficiency but no formal qualification will still be considered. The school caters for students of all different ages and has a reputation for supporting their staff and providing a welcoming work environment to newcomers. This role will play a pivotal part in ensuring the student is able to get the most out of their day at school, learning to the best of their ability through the support, guidance, and translation of teaching assistants and teachers. There are options for this role to be either full or part-time on a long term basis to go on until the end of the academic year, with the potential to go into a permanent placement. The successful candidate will have the resiliency and empathy to engage the students, as well as competent BSL skills to support them in class.

Your role will include:
Working with the class as a whole, using BSL throughout the day to teach the students
Working with the students on a 1:1 basis, supporting with school work
Establishing constructive relationships with the children in the provision
Supporting the class teacher and other support staff to maintain a positive working environment
Maintaining a record and providing regular feedback about pupils to the teacher and/or SENCO in order to best track pupil progress
Assisting the school in communicating with parents and carers via the appropriate channels
General TA responsibilities such as assisting the class teacher when needed

Key skills and experience needed:
British Sign Language certificate
Commitment to and passion for working with children
Experience working in schools is ideal but not essential
Experience working or volunteering with children
Flexibility in your approach to educating and supporting children
Team Teach certification is ideal but not essential
