As a Cover Supervisor, you are responsible for the classroom in the absence of the regular teacher. Unlike a supply teacher, you are not required to plan lessons.
- Supervision: Leading classes (usually Key Stage 3 and 4) using pre-prepared lesson plans left by the department.
- Behaviour Management: Maintaining a positive and focused learning environment using the school's specific behaviour policy.
- Guidance: Helping students stay on task and answering general questions about the work provided.
- Reporting: Providing feedback to the school's "Cover Manager" or the returning teacher regarding student progress and any incidents.
Candidate Requirements
- Experience: Previous experience working with young people (coaching, youth work, or school-based experience) is essential.
- Education: A degree is often preferred (ideal for aspiring teachers), but strong GCSEs in English and Maths (Grade C/4 or above) are required.
- Compliance: An Enhanced Child DBS on the Update Service is mandatory (Randstad can assist with a new application if needed).
- Attributes: You must be confident, resilient, and able to command a room with a "firm but fair" approach.
