We are seeking a proactive, engaging, and highly effective Classroom Cover Specialist to join a successful secondary academy in Mildenhall, Suffolk. The Role
As a Cover Supervisor, your primary responsibility is to supervise classes across various subjects and age groups (typically Key Stage 3 and 4) using resources and lesson plans provided by the absent teacher.
You will act as the key adult in the room, focusing on maintaining discipline, motivating students, and ensuring tasks are completed to the best of their ability. This role requires resilience, quick thinking, and consistent application of school behaviour protocols. You will be instrumental in the smooth operation of the school day.
Core Duties (Your Day-to-Day Responsibilities)
- Supervise all classes assigned throughout the day, ensuring students are engaged with the provided curriculum work.
- Effectively manage group dynamics and student behaviour using positive reinforcement and the school's established behaviour system.
- Clearly communicate the lesson objectives and tasks to students, addressing any procedural questions they may have.
- Manage and utilise classroom resources efficiently, collecting and securely returning student work at the end of the session.
- Record and report any student issues, concerns, or emergencies to the relevant senior staff or head of department.
- Adhere strictly to the school's policies on safeguarding, health and safety, and student welfare.
Ideal Candidate Profile (What You Will Bring)
- Demonstrated ability to control and lead groups of secondary school-aged students (11-16) with authority and professionalism.
- Flexibility: Readiness to cover any subject area with pre-set work, often at short notice.
- Resilience: The ability to handle unexpected challenges calmly and maintain composure under pressure.
- Communication Skills: Excellent verbal skills for clear instruction delivery and effective interaction with both students and staff.
- Previous experience (paid or voluntary) in a school, youth group, or similar educational setting is highly desirable.
- A clear and current Enhanced DBS check (or willingness to obtain one swiftly).
