Bury St Edmunds
Are you an educator who believes that mastering language is the key to unlocking a student's potential in every other area of life?
Can you transform a complex piece of 19th-century prose into a relatable, gripping narrative for a room full of teenagers, while simultaneously sharpening their own ability to argue, persuade, and create?
We are searching for a passionate Qualified English Teacher to join a forward-thinking Secondary School in Bury St Edmunds. This is a full-time, long-term role for a specialist who thrives on the diversity of the English curriculum-from the rhythmic beauty of poetry to the structured logic of non-fiction. Whether you are guiding Year 7s through their first novel or coaching Year 11s toward GCSE success, we need a teacher who leads with inspiration and high expectations.
Your Responsibilities
- Curriculum Delivery: Plan and facilitate high-impact lessons across Key Stages 3 and 4, ensuring all students engage with a wide range of diverse and challenging texts.
- Literacy Excellence: Implement strategies to improve reading ages and writing fluency, ensuring that English remains a gateway to success across the whole school.
- Examination Preparation: Lead GCSE cohorts through the AQA or Edexcel specifications, utilising data-driven feedback to close attainment gaps and push for top grades.
- Critical Thinking Advocacy: Encourage students to challenge perspectives, identify bias, and deconstruct intent in both historical literature and modern media.
- Creative Mentorship: Nurture student voices through creative writing workshops, debating societies, and school-wide literacy competitions.
- Collaborative Practice: Work closely with the SENCO and support staff to ensure that students with additional needs are fully included and challenged within the English classroom.
What You'll Bring to the Team
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS): This is an absolute requirement for this position.
- Subject Passion: A deep-seated love for English literature and language, backed by a relevant degree and a strong understanding of the National Curriculum.
- Classroom Management: The ability to create a purposeful, high-energy learning environment where every student feels safe to share their ideas.
- Innovative Pedagogy: A toolkit of teaching strategies that make complex analysis accessible to learners of all abilities.
- Compliance: An enhanced Child DBS on the Update Service (or a willingness to process a new one through Randstad).
