The Role
An excellent opportunity is available for a motivated and responsible General Cover Supervisor to join the operational support team at a well-regarded secondary school in Mildenhall. This position offers an immediate start on a temporary contract basis.
In this crucial role, you will be responsible for overseeing classes (students aged 11-16) across the school timetable when the regular subject teacher is absent for short periods. Your primary focus is not instruction, but supervision and classroom management. You must ensure that students remain productive, focused on the pre-set work, and that the school's high standards of behaviour are upheld at all times. You will facilitate the learning process by communicating instructions and maintaining a controlled, positive environment.
Core Duties
- Supervise assigned lessons across various subjects for KS3 and KS4 students, confirming they are completing the work left by the class teacher.
- Proactively manage student behaviour, consistently implementing the school's behaviour policy to ensure an orderly and safe learning space.
- Clearly explain the content and activities to students, ensuring the learning objectives are understood.
- Address basic queries regarding the assigned work and monitor student progress throughout the lesson.
- Document and report any significant disciplinary issues or concerns to the relevant Head of Department or senior staff.
- Fully comply with all school policies, particularly those related to safety and safeguarding.
Candidate Profile
- Essential: Proven confidence and authority to successfully manage and supervise large groups of secondary students (11-16 years old).
- Essential: A strong background in leading groups, demonstrating effective behaviour management and communication skills (e.g., gained through teaching support, sports coaching, or youth leadership).
- Preferred: A degree qualification or strong academic profile, beneficial for supervising diverse subjects.
- Highly reliable, punctual, organised, and capable of adapting quickly to daily changes in the timetable.
- Must be resilient and possess excellent problem-solving skills to handle classroom dynamics effectively.
- Must hold an Enhanced Child DBS on the Update Service or be willing to process one immediately.
