Are you passionate about supporting the emotional well-being of young people?
Randstad Education is looking for a resilient and empathetic SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) Support Assistant for a partner secondary school in Basildon.
In this specialised role, you will work with students who face barriers to learning due to emotional trauma, anxiety, or behavioural difficulties. Your goal isn't just academic-it's about building trust, de-escalating challenging situations, and helping students develop the emotional regulation skills they need to succeed in and out of the classroom.
Key Responsibilities
- Emotional Coaching: Use de-escalation techniques to support students during moments of crisis or high anxiety.
- Relationship Building: Act as a "Key Worker" for specific students, providing a consistent, non-judgmental adult presence.
- Nurture Groups: Facilitate small-group activities designed to improve social skills, self-esteem, and conflict resolution.
- Behaviour Monitoring: Work closely with the school's pastoral team to track triggers and implement Individual Behaviour Plans (IBPs).
- Inclusive Learning: Adapt classroom tasks to ensure students feel capable and motivated, preventing "avoidance" behaviours.
Requirements
- Resilience: The ability to remain calm and professional when faced with challenging or defiant behaviour.
- Background: Experience in youth work, PRUs (Pupil Referral Units), sports coaching, or mental health support is highly beneficial.
- Empathy: A deep understanding of how trauma and mental health can impact a child's ability to learn.
- Training: Any training in Team Teach, Price, or Restorative Justice is a significant advantage (though Randstad can provide training).
- Compliance: Enhanced Child DBS on the Update Service.
Why Join Randstad?
- Specialist Support: Work with a consultant who understands the complexities of SEMH settings.
- Competitive Pay: Reflective of the specialised nature of the role.
- Professional Development: Free access to Mental Health First Aid and Safeguarding Level 2 training.
- Impact: The opportunity to see genuine, long-term transformation in the students you support.
