Are you an expert in de-escalation with a passion for supporting students with complex behavioural needs?
We are seeking a resilient and empathetic Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) Mentor to work within a specialist provision in Colchester.
This role is designed for a specialist who moves away from traditional "discipline" and instead focuses on understanding the "why" behind challenging behaviour to foster a safe, inclusive learning environment.
As a PBS Mentor, you will work closely with students who may have SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) needs, Trauma, or Autism. Your primary goal is to reduce the frequency and intensity of challenging behaviours by implementing proactive strategies and building deep, trusting relationships.
Key Responsibilities
... - Behavioural Analysis: Identify triggers and environmental factors that contribute to anxiety or distress in learners.
- Proactive Intervention: Implement Positive Behaviour Support plans that prioritise student dignity and long-term skill development.
- Crisis Management: Safely manage high-pressure situations using approved de-escalation techniques (e.g., Team Teach, MAPA, or Step On).
- Mentorship: Act as a positive role model, helping students develop emotional literacy, self-regulation, and social coping mechanisms.
- Reporting: Maintain detailed logs of incidents and progress to help the SENCO and external practitioners refine support strategies.
Candidate Requirements
- Proven Experience: A strong background in PBS, Youth Work, PRUs, or specialised SEND settings.
- Specialised Training: Current certification in recognised de-escalation/restraint training is highly desirable.
- Resilience: The emotional maturity to remain calm and objective in challenging or confrontational situations.
- Empathy: A deep understanding of how trauma and neurodiversity impact behaviour.
Closing Statement
In this role, success isn't just about a quiet classroom; it's about a student feeling understood enough to learn. If you have the expertise to look past the behaviour and see the child, and the skills to guide them toward a more positive future, we invite you to apply.
