Role: Senior Engineer (Aviation / Airfield Infrastructure)
Location: Bishop's Stortford area
Rate: £450 - £500 per day
Duration: Ongoing Freelance Contract

The Opportunity
We are looking for a highly skilled Senior Engineer to join a specialized infrastructure project near Bishop's Stortford. This is a prestigious, long-term freelance opportunity working within a high-security aviation environment.
The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing complex engineering works where precision and strict adherence to operational constraints are non-negotiable. Given the nature of the site, prior aviation experience is an absolute requirement.
Key Responsibilities
- Technical Leadership: Lead the engineering function on-site, ensuring all works (airside or landside) align with stringent aviation specifications.
- Complex Setting Out & QA: Manage high-tolerance setting out and oversee comprehensive Quality Assurance processes for specialist materials (e.g., PQ Concrete, asphalt, or airfield lighting).
- Operational Coordination: Liaise with airport authorities to manage work permits, airside access, and strict "hand-back" times to ensure zero disruption to flight operations.
- Design Management: Review technical drawings and specifications, proactively identifying and resolving potential clashes or design issues.
- Mentorship: Provide guidance and oversight to junior engineers and site staff.
Requirements
- Aviation Experience (Mandatory): Must have a proven track record working on airfield projects (runways, taxiways, stands, or airport infrastructure).
- Technical Expertise: Deep understanding of the specific safety and quality standards required in a regulated aviation environment.
- Qualifications: Degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent; CSCS (Black or Gold Card).
- Clearance: Ability to pass relevant security vetting for airside access (valid Passport and 5-year checkable work history).
- Communication: Exceptional communication skills to manage stakeholders across the airport estate.
