all you need to know.

Be prepared!

  • Be ready to leave the house within 10 mins (or less) from 7:00am
  • Keep a notebook (or your diary) and a pen by the phone
  • Buy an A to Z that covers the area you will be teaching in
  • Create a Supply Pack – see handout
  • Keep details on the schools you have been to – travel directions, how long to get there etc.

Dress code

  • Men – shirt and tie with trousers/cords but no denim
  • Women – comfortable shoes, clothes that you can stoop over in and bend down with ease.
  • PE – arrived dressed as above with a change of clothes for PE

Questions to ask when you arrive

  • Will I be responsible for any play or lunch duties?
  • Do any of the children have medical/SEN needs I should be aware of?
  • If the need arises, how do I deal with extreme behaviour?

Before the children arrive

  • Put your name and the date on the board
  • Locate and review the class rules and evacuation procedures
  • Read through lesson plans left by the teacher
  • Organise the resources needed for the day – you may not have time later
  • Study the classroom seating plan – if there isn’t one, make one

At the end of the day

  • Return all resources to the stock cupboards
  • Challenge pupils to remember what they have learnt during the day (they can impress their teacher tomorrow!)
  • Remind about homework (write this on the board to jog your memory)
  • Ensure the pupils tidy their areas, tables etc

After the children leave

  • Fill out a report form for the permanent teacher
  • Leave samples of the work you have prepared if there was none set
  • Mark all work that was set – if some wasn’t done explain why
  • Leave the teacher's desk tidy
