Are you an experienced and highly skilled Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) seeking a pivotal role in mental health crisis intervention?
Derby City Council is looking for a dedicated and autonomous AMHP to join our Mental Health Service. This is an exciting opportunity to apply your expert knowledge of the Mental Health Act (MHA) 1983 and associated legislation, ensuring individuals experiencing mental health crises receive timely, appropriate, and least restrictive interventions.
About the Role:
As an AMHP, you will be responsible for undertaking statutory duties under the Mental Health Act, coordinating mental health assessments, and making critical decisions regarding compulsory admission to hospital or other alternatives. You will work within a multi-disciplinary framework, collaborating closely with health colleagues, service users, carers, and other agencies to safeguard rights and promote recovery.
Key Responsibilities:
Act as the lead professional in coordinating and undertaking Mental Health Act assessments in various settings (e.g., community, hospital, police stations).
Exercise independent professional judgment to determine the most appropriate course of action, including making applications for detention where necessary, always prioritising the least restrictive option.
Bring a social perspective to Mental Health Act assessments, considering social, cultural, and individual circumstances, and advocating for service users' rights.
Provide expert advice and guidance on mental health legislation and its application to service users, their families, carers, and other professionals.
Maintain accurate, comprehensive, and legally compliant records of all assessments and decisions.
Prepare high-quality reports and statements for Mental Health Tribunals and other legal proceedings.
Work collaboratively with psychiatrists, nurses, psychologists, police, and other statutory and voluntary sector partners.
Participate in relevant training and continuous professional development to maintain AMHP approval and enhance practice.
Undertake duties relating to Guardianship and Community Treatment Orders (CTOs) as required.
What We Are Looking For:
Current professional qualification.
Current registration with your professional body.
Current Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) warrant, with evidence of ongoing training and re-approval.
Significant post-qualification experience in a mental health setting, ideally including previous AMHP experience.
Comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of the Mental Health Act 1983 (as amended), Mental Capacity Act 2005, Human Rights Act 1998, and other relevant legislation and codes of practice.
Demonstrable skills in complex assessment, risk management, crisis intervention, and effective decision-making under pressure.
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills, with the ability to engage sensitively with individuals in distress.
Ability to work autonomously, manage a demanding workload, and prioritise effectively.
A strong commitment to person-centred practice, promoting recovery, and upholding human rights.
Proficiency in using IT systems for case management and record-keeping.
Full UK driving license and access to a car for work purposes.
