The Role
As an AMHP in our Adult Mental Health Team, you will play a critical role in undertaking statutory duties under the Mental Health Act 1983 (amended 2007) and contributing to a person-centred, recovery-focused approach to mental health care. Your key responsibilities will include:
Undertaking Mental Health Act assessments, coordinating the assessment process, and making applications for detention where necessary, always promoting the least restrictive option.
Applying a social perspective to mental health assessments, balancing individual rights with the need for protection and treatment.
Working collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team, including psychiatrists, nurses, psychologists, and other professionals.
Providing expert advice and consultation on mental health legislation and best practice to colleagues and partner agencies.
Contributing to the effective management of complex cases, including those involving safeguarding concerns.
Maintaining accurate, comprehensive, and timely records in line with statutory requirements and local policies.
Participating in an AMHP duty rota, responding promptly to requests for assessment.
Ensuring continuous professional development and maintaining your AMHP warrant.
About You
We are looking for a highly motivated, resilient, and experienced AMHP with:
A qualified Social Worker with current registration with Social Work England.
Current Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) warrant and demonstrable experience of undertaking Mental Health Act assessments.
A comprehensive understanding of the Mental Health Act 1983 (amended 2007), Mental Capacity Act 2005, Care Act 2014, and other relevant legislation and codes of practice.
Strong analytical, decision-making, and risk assessment skills, particularly in complex and high-pressure situations.
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills, with the ability to engage effectively with service users, carers, and a wide range of professionals.
A commitment to anti-discriminatory practice and promoting diversity and inclusion.
Ability to work autonomously, manage a demanding caseload, and prioritise effectively.
A valid UK driving license and access to a car for business use.
