Approved Mental Heath Practitioner
£50 per hour
AMHPS needed to work Monday - Friday
9-9 shifts
Duties :
- Coordinate and undertake assessments under the MHA for individuals who may need to be detained in a psychiatric hospital for assessment or treatment. This typically involves working with two doctors.
- While doctors can recommend detention, it is the AMHP's responsibility to make the final decision and legal application for a person's detention under sections of the MHA
- AMHPs are legally bound to consider less restrictive alternatives to compulsory hospital admission and to ensure that any intervention is as least restrictive as possible, balancing the person's rights with their need for protection.
- AMHPs bring a crucial social perspective to assessments, considering an individual's social and cultural circumstances, risks, and protective factors, rather than just clinical factors. This can provide a counter to a purely medical model.
- AMHPs must have in-depth knowledge of mental health law, including the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and the Human Rights Act 1998, to ensure that the rights of those being assessed are protected and that all legal processes are followed correctly.
- It is a duty of the AMHP to identify and involve the individual's nearest relative in the assessment process and seek their views.
- AMHPs also have powers to make applications for Guardianship (Section 7) and are involved in the process of Community Treatment Orders, which allow for a person to be treated in the community under certain conditions following a period of detention.
- AMHPs have the power to convey a patient to hospital or authorise others to do so, and in some circumstances, to enter and inspect premises where someone may not be receiving proper care.
- AMHPs are required to undertake a minimum of 18 hours of relevant refresher training annually and undergo a re-approval process to maintain their competence.
