Cambridge
Are you a tradesperson looking to transition into education, or an experienced TA with a passion for hands-on, vocational learning?
Do you have the ability to inspire young people who struggle in a traditional desk-bound classroom but thrive when they have a tool in their hand?
We are seeking a practical, motivated, and safety-conscious Construction Teaching Assistant to join a specialised SEN School in Cambridge. This role is perfect for someone who can bridge the gap between technical skills and emotional support, helping students with social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs or moderate learning difficulties (MLD) gain their Level 1 and 2 vocational qualifications.
Your Responsibilities
- Workshop Mentorship: Support the Lead Instructor in delivering practical sessions in bricklaying, carpentry, painting/decorating, and basic plumbing.
- Health & Safety Advocacy: Ensure all students adhere to strict workshop safety protocols, managing the safe use of tools and PPE (Personal Protective Equipment).
- 1:1 Practical Coaching: Work closely with students who find theory difficult, helping them translate textbook concepts into hands-on projects.
- SEMH Support: Act as a positive role model, using de-escalation techniques to help students manage frustrations that can arise during complex practical tasks.
- Employability Focus: Assist students in developing "soft skills" like punctuality, teamwork, and problem-solving, preparing them for future apprenticeships or college.
- Resource Management: Help maintain the workshop environment, ensuring tools are accounted for and materials are prepared for the day's lessons.
What You'll Bring to the Team
- Handy/Trade Background: Basic proficiency in one or more construction trades (Carpentry, Bricklaying, DIY, or General Maintenance) is highly desirable.
- Resilient Personality: The ability to remain firm but fair, providing a steadying influence for students who may have experienced challenges in mainstream education.
- Patient Instruction: A knack for breaking down complex physical tasks into simple, manageable steps for learners with diverse needs.
- Engagement Skills: The ability to build rapport with teenagers and young adults through shared interests in practical, "real-world" work.
- Compliance: An enhanced Child DBS on the Update Service (or a willingness to process one urgently via Randstad).
