A Cover Supervisor is an essential, non-teaching role responsible for supervising whole classes during short-term teacher absences. You will be provided with pre-prepared work and your main focus is on maintaining a positive learning environment, managing student behaviour, and ensuring students complete the tasks set for them.
Main Duties:
As a Cover Supervisor, you are crucial in facilitating student learning during a teacher's planned or unplanned absence. Your duties involve:
- Lesson Oversight: Delivering and monitoring work set by the absent subject teacher, ensuring all students are engaged and productive.
- Positive Learning Climate: Establishing and sustaining a professional and orderly atmosphere conducive to learning, following school protocols.
- Student Support: Providing guidance and direction to students regarding the assignment's process and expected outcome.
- Safeguarding & Welfare: Being vigilant regarding student well-being and following school procedures for any pastoral or safeguarding concerns.
- Timely Administration: Managing class lists, marking attendance, and collecting completed assignments at the end of the lesson.
- Clear Reporting: Documenting and relaying any significant events, issues, or feedback on student progress to the appropriate teacher or leadership team.
Skills You Will Need:
- Exceptional Communication Skills: The ability to clearly convey instructions to students and communicate effectively with staff.
- Confidence & Authority: The presence to manage a classroom of secondary school students effectively.
- Adaptability & Flexibility: Readiness to cover a variety of subjects across different year groups, sometimes at short notice.
- Strong Behaviour Management: The skill to manage challenging behaviour calmly and consistently in line with school policy.
- Patience & Empathy: A genuine enjoyment of working with young people and the ability to handle situations with understanding.
- Organisational Skills: The ability to manage time efficiently and handle administrative tasks accurately.
