The Role:
A fantastic opportunity is available for a proactive and committed Design & Technology (DT) Teacher to join an established and specialist SEN school serving the Thetford area.
This position is crucial to the provision of high-quality, personalised education. You will be responsible for planning, preparing, and delivering an engaging and highly differentiated DT curriculum across various material areas (e.g., resistant materials, textiles, food technology) to small classes of pupils with a range of complex needs, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD), Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD), and associated complex needs. Your practical efforts will directly contribute to fostering functional life skills, promoting independence, and building a sense of achievement in a safe, inclusive, and structured environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and deliver an accessible and engaging DT curriculum that is fully differentiated and tailored to meet the functional skills and vocational targets set out in students' Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs).
- Create and maintain a safe and structured workshop/classroom, ensuring all tools, equipment, and materials are adapted and managed appropriately for students with physical and sensory needs.
- Teach practical skills using clear, step-by-step instructions and visual supports, focusing on key processes, material properties, and safe working practices.
- Collaborate closely with Teaching Assistants and multi-disciplinary teams (e.g., Occupational Therapists) to integrate fine motor skills development and sensory regulation strategies into DT lessons.
- Manage classroom behaviour effectively, employing positive behaviour support and calm de-escalation techniques, with a focus on routine and predictability in the practical environment.
- Contribute to the monitoring and accurate reporting on pupil progress, documenting functional skill acquisition, problem-solving abilities, and independence levels.
Requirements
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) is essential, along with a degree or specialist training in Design & Technology, Engineering, or a related material-based subject.
- Proven experience teaching DT across key stages, with recent experience or a strong understanding of working within a specialist SEN setting or with pupils with complex learning difficulties.
- A naturally calm, methodical, and highly safety-conscious nature, with a genuine enthusiasm for empowering vulnerable young people through practical learning.
- The ability to quickly establish strong, professional, and trusting relationships with pupils, parents, and staff.
- Excellent teamwork, communication, and organisational skills, particularly in the management of equipment and resources.
- A current Enhanced Child DBS on the update service (or a willingness to obtain one promptly).
