The Role: Design and Technology Technician
This is an exciting opportunity to join the support team at a dynamic and high-achieving academy in Wakefield. Requirements
... - Prior experience working as a Technician or in a similar practical/engineering/workshop environment.
- A working knowledge of Health and Safety procedures relevant to a school D&T department.
- Eligibility to work in the UK.
- Enhanced Child DBS on the updated service (Willingness to apply for one)
Essential Skills
- Practical & Technical Competence: Proficient in using and maintaining a range of workshop equipment and tools.
- Health & Safety Awareness: A thorough understanding and commitment to safe working practices in a D&T environment.
- Organisation & Planning: Exceptional ability to manage stock, prioritise tasks, and organise resources efficiently for multiple lessons.
- IT Literacy: Competence in general IT and a willingness to learn specialist CAD/CAM software.
- Problem-Solving: Strong aptitude for troubleshooting and resolving mechanical or technical issues with equipment.
- Communication Skills: Clear and effective communication with students, teachers, and external suppliers.
Key Responsibilities
- Preparation of Resources: Timely preparation, setting up, and clearing away of equipment and materials for practical lessons across all areas of Design and Technology (e.g., resistant materials, food, textiles, CAD/CAM).
- Equipment Maintenance: Routine cleaning, maintenance, testing, and minor repair of departmental machinery, tools, and equipment to ensure they are in excellent working order.
- Health and Safety Compliance: Strict adherence to, and active promotion of, all Health and Safety regulations (including COSHH) and departmental risk assessments.
- Stock Management: Monitoring, managing, and maintaining accurate stock levels of all consumables, materials, and components, liaising with suppliers for cost-effective purchasing.
- Technical Support: Providing technical advice and practical assistance to teaching staff and students during lessons and project work, including demonstrations of equipment use.
- Workshop Organisation: Ensuring all workshops, preparation areas, and storerooms are kept clean, secure, safe, and orderly at all times.
- CAD/CAM Support: Assisting students and staff with specialist equipment like laser cutters, 3D printers, and relevant software.
- Record Keeping: Maintaining accurate records of maintenance logs, stock inventories, and purchase orders.
- Display Creation: Assisting in the preparation and installation of engaging displays of student work within the department and communal areas.
- General Departmental Support: Carrying out general DIY and upkeep tasks within the department (e.g., shelving, minor painting) to support the Head of Department.
