The Opportunity
A fantastic, full-time, long-term opportunity exists for a skilled Teaching Assistant to work within a well-regarded specialist provision near Bury St Edmunds. This crucial role involves supporting pupils across various age ranges (Primary/Secondary) who have complex and varied Special Educational Needs, which may include:
- Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC)
- Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD)
- Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD)
- Associated communication, sensory, and physical needs.
Your vital contribution will focus on working intensively with specific pupils, both 1:1 and in small groups, helping them to access a highly individualised, multi-sensory curriculum and progress towards targets outlined in their Education, Health, and Care Plans (EHCPs).
Core Responsibilities
- Provide high-quality, targeted 1:1 and small group support to pupils with complex SEN, adapting resources and environments to meet their sensory and learning needs.
- Assist the Class Teacher in the preparation of differentiated learning materials, ensuring they are accessible, multi-sensory, and aligned with EHCP goals.
- Support the implementation of specialised communication strategies, such as PECS, Makaton, or visual timetables, to aid pupil understanding and interaction.
- Contribute to the positive management of student behaviour, using proactive strategies and Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) techniques to ensure a calm and predictable classroom environment.
- Assist with personal care routines, manual handling, and mobility support as required (full training provided).
- Accurately record and report on pupil progress, incidents, and specific interventions to the Class Teacher and other professional staff.
- Collaborate effectively with in-house and external therapists (e.g., Speech & Language, Occupational Therapy) to embed therapeutic goals within the daily routine.
Essential Profile
- Proven experience supporting children or young people with complex Special Educational Needs (such as ASC, SLD, or PMLD) is highly desirable.
- A genuine understanding of, or willingness to learn, structured intervention techniques (e.g., visual support, sensory diets, positive behaviour management).
- High levels of patience, empathy, resilience, and flexibility, coupled with a calm and consistent approach to routines.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work confidently and proactively as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
- A strong commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
- Possession of an Enhanced Child DBS on the update service (or willingness to complete one promptly).
