The Role:
A wonderful opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic Graduate SEN Teaching Assistant / Learning Support Assistant to join a dedicated team at a highly regarded specialist school in the Cambridge area. This role is ideal for recent graduates (e.g., Psychology, Education, Criminology, or relevant humanities/science subjects) who are exploring a career path working with young people.
This essential support role involves providing tailored 1:1 and small group assistance to pupils across primary or secondary age ranges who have complex needs, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Communication and Interaction Needs, and Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD). You will be instrumental in helping students access a differentiated curriculum, managing their emotional needs, and fostering their confidence and independence under the guidance of a Class Teacher.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide direct, focused academic and emotional support to students, helping them access lesson content and complete tasks.
- Assist the Class Teacher in preparing and adapting learning materials, including creating visual aids and sensory resources.
- Observe and accurately record student progress, achievements, and any significant behavioural or emotional incidents, contributing to EHCP/IEP reviews.
- Support the implementation of positive behaviour management strategies and provide calm de-escalation support when students are distressed.
- Facilitate effective communication and social interaction skills, modelling appropriate language and behaviour.
- Act as a positive role model and mentor, encouraging students' self-esteem, motivation, and engagement in learning.
- Support students with personal care needs where required, maintaining dignity and respect at all times.
Requirements
- A recent University Degree (2:1 or above is highly desirable) in a relevant field such as Psychology, Education, Speech and Language, or a core academic subject.
- A strong, verifiable interest in working with pupils with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and a commitment to understanding their individual challenges.
- Some experience working with children or young people (e.g., tutoring, volunteering, youth work, or within a school setting) is beneficial.
- An incredibly patient, empathetic, highly resilient, and calm demeanour.
- Excellent communication, literacy, and numeracy skills, suitable for supporting a wide curriculum.
- A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
- A current Enhanced DBS on the update service (or a willingness to obtain one promptly).
