Bury St Edmunds
Are you a Senior Support professional ready to take the next step in classroom leadership?
Do you have the expertise to step up and lead a lesson, the technical skill to manage EHCP data, and the emotional intelligence to mentor a team of support staff?
We are seeking an experienced and ambitious Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) to join a well regarded SEN School in Bury St Edmunds. This is a pivotal role designed for someone who bridges the gap between a Teaching Assistant and a Class Teacher. You will be a key pillar in a setting that supports students with complex needs, including Autism (ASC), Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD), and non-verbal communication profiles.
Your Strategic Responsibilities
As an HLTA, your role carries greater autonomy and impact:
- Instructional Leadership: Take the lead in delivering pre-planned lessons and interventions across the class when the teacher is absent or leading annual reviews.
- Specialist Intervention: Design and facilitate small-group sessions focusing on phonics, numeracy, or sensory integration tailored to specific EHCP targets.
- Team Coordination: Mentor and deploy a team of Teaching Assistants, ensuring classroom routines are followed and 1:1 support is high-impact.
- Communication Mastery: Model the use of advanced communication tools (such as Proloquo2Go, PECS, or Makaton) for both students and junior staff.
- Assessment & Reporting: Assist in the high-level tracking of student progress, contributing significant data and observations to EHCP annual reviews and parent meetings.
What We Are Looking For
- HLTA Status or Equivalent: A Level 4 HLTA qualification or significant, high-level experience in an SEN classroom.
- Specialist Knowledge: Deep understanding of a range of SEN needs and the ability to adapt curriculum content on the fly.
- Leadership Potential: A proactive professional who is comfortable managing other adults and taking responsibility for classroom "flow."
- Resilience: The ability to lead de-escalation strategies and maintain a calm, structured environment during challenging moments.
- Vetting: An enhanced Child DBS on the Update Service (or a willingness to process a new one).
Why Choose Randstad Bury St Edmunds?

- Career Progression: A perfect stepping stone for those considering a move into qualified teaching or SENCO roles.
- Professional Development: Access to senior-level training, including Team Teach (Full) and Advanced Safeguarding.
- Stability: A full-time, long-term position in a school with an outstanding local reputation.
- Referral Bonus: Earn £300 for every colleague you successfully refer to the Randstad family.
